Twinbrook

Twinbrook is a housing estate in West Belfast.

It was officially opened in 1971 to cater for the amount of families (both Protestant and Catholic) moving away from the Troubles in Belfast at that time.

Twinbrook originally had a church and two Primary schools, one protestant (Saint Marks) and one Catholic (Saint Lukes). The huge influx of Catholics led to both the schools and being used for the Catholic population and the Protestants largely moved to nearby Areema.

Today Twinbrook has a vastly Catholic population and as such has grown up in the 'Republican' atmosphere of West Belfast.

The murals on the gable walls of Twinbrook tend to reflect this culture.
