We stayed in the quiet town of Kalamaki, on the eastern end of Laganas Bay.
The beach is sandy and gently shelving and offers protection to
the endangered loggerhead turtles Caretta - Caretta. The breeding season for the shy loggerhead turtle coincides with
the main holiday season. During July and August, the females come ashore to lay their eggs about 50cm below the surface. The
warm sand insulates the eggs, and the baby turtles hatch eight weeks later, crawling towards the bright moonlit sea.

The picture below shows a lookout post built on top of the cliff before the second world war. Apparently
this was built as a preventative measure to protect the island from invasion by an enemy force.
Nature is slowly eroding the cliff below the lookout post and I suppose eventually it will crumble
in to the sea.
Below this picture are shots of Wendy and me sitting on top of the post with our backs to the bay.

We stayed in the Asteri apartments in Kalamaki - and they had the quite basic level of Greek hygiene
and facilities. As a bonus the swimming pool and Kostas Bar were only about 20 yards away!!
Most nights we went to Mermaids Bar for dinner - the portions were unbelievably huge and the prices
were very reasonable.
